The Great Alternatives of the 19th Century

The 19th century gave rise not only to liberalism, but also to its main critics—socialism, Marxism, and anarchism. All three addressed the same question: what is wrong with capitalism and the liberal state? Three different diagnoses—three different cures.

Utopian socialism (Owen, Saint-Simon, Fourier) preceded Marx. The idea: to rebuild society through exemplary communities, cooperatives, industrial planning. Owen in New Lanark (Scotland) created a model factory with social infrastructure—and made a profit. Fourier designed “phalansteries”—collective settlements with diverse labor and free morals.

Marx: Scientific Socialism

Marx criticized the utopians: they do not understand the laws of history. His “scientific socialism” claimed to have discovered the objective laws of history—just as Darwin discovered the laws of biology. Capitalism is doomed due to internal contradictions: concentration of capital, pauperization of the proletariat, crises of overproduction, intensifying class struggle.

After capitalism—socialism (state ownership, planned economy) and then communism (the state withers away, free association of producers). “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs” is the formula for communist distribution.

The problem: Marx did not describe in detail how exactly a socialist economy works. The Soviet experiment is one interpretation, which produced an authoritarian state instead of the withering away of the state.

Anarchism: Against the State

Anarchism (Proudhon, Bakunin, Kropotkin) shares with Marxism the critique of capitalism—but differs on the solution. The state is not a tool for the transitional period, but rather a source of oppression as such. Proudhon: “Property is theft.” Bakunin: even the dictatorship of the proletariat will create a new form of oppression.

Anarchists proposed: voluntary federations of self-governing communes and producer cooperatives. Kropotkin demonstrated that mutual aid (not competition) is the driving force of evolution and human history.

The Paris Commune (1871)—two weeks of Paris self-government, brutally suppressed—became a symbol for anarchists and Marxists, who interpreted it differently.
