Aretē · Lexicon
The words of the movement.
Aretē does not invent slang. It borrows precise words from Greek and Arabic, and uses them exactly. When a Leon says “I ran the idea through elenchos,” another Leon understands at once — like a lawyer saying claimant, or a mathematician saying necessary and sufficient. Precision is a sign of belonging.
Read once. Return often. Aretē does not translate this lexicon for outsiders — those who want to understand will enter and understand.
- Arete
- Greek ἀρετή — excellence in action, realised potential. The name of the movement. A sharp knife is excellent because it cuts; a thinking person because they think to the end and do not swerve.
- Stoa
- Greek στοά — a covered colonnade, a portico. The school, the place, the address. One enters through the portico and leaves changed.
- Leon · Leontes
- Λέων, plural Λέοντες — lion, lions. The name for the people of Arete. Not a status or a nickname — Nietzsche's lion stage: the one who has said no to received values and cleared the ground. Leon began and did not stop.
- Maieutics
- Greek μαιευτική — Socrates' “midwifery.” Drawing out knowledge through a chain of questions: the student already knows; the teacher helps them give birth. Inside Stoa — the dialogue format in which the AI walks you to your own conclusion.
- Elenchos
- Greek ἔλεγχος — refutation, the Socratic cross-examination. An idea you were holding is put under the question — and either breaks or comes out stronger. “I ran the idea through elenchos” — a password: the person crash-tested their own thought.
- Ephemeris
- Greek ἐφημερίς — “daily,” a daily record. In Marcus Aurelius — private notes to himself. Inside Stoa — a feed of short pieces written for today's question; readable one-handed over a coffee.
- Askesis
- Greek ἄσκησις — exercise, training. For the Stoics — the daily practice that holds character in shape. Inside Stoa — the long tracks, where assignments are not one-offs but return on the spaced-repetition calendar.
- Anamnesis
- Greek ἀνάμνησις — recollection. In Plato — learning is the recollection of what the soul already knows. Inside Stoa — spaced repetition: an article returns on day 3, day 7, day 30, so knowledge does not fall out.
- al-ghubash · العُبَاش
- Arabic العُبَاش — the hour before dawn, when the world is still dark and the horizon already paling. The time at which Leontes work. “I read in al-ghubash” — three words, a password.
- Stigmē · Στιγμή
- Greek στιγμή — a point. Four times a year, on the solstices and equinoxes, each Leon writes one observation from the past three months — two or three sentences, not an essay. Four Points a year; in five years, twenty. A personal chronicle inside the collective one.
- mawqif · موقف
- Arabic موقف — a place of standing. In pre-Islamic Arabia the poet stepped onto the mawqif and recited a qasida before the tribe. Inside Stoa — a public post on the Agora: one thesis or one question, three paragraphs at most. Minimum rung — Apprentice. No emoji.
- Eponym · ἐπώνυμος
- In the Greek polis the archon-eponym was the one whose name was given to the year. Inside Arete — one Leon per year, elected by the Leontes. The year of the movement bears their name.
