System of Verb Groups
French verbs are divided into three groups:
- 1st group (-er): the largest, regular (except aller)
- 2nd group (-ir): finir, choisir, réussir
- 3rd group: irregular (être, avoir, aller, pouvoir, vouloir, etc.)
Conjugation Rules of -er Verbs
Remove -er and add the endings:

Important: Je, tu, il, ils — sound the same (silent endings): [travaille]
Key Verbs (-er)
travailler — to work
- Je travaille dans la finance. — I work in finance.
- Nous travaillons ensemble. — We work together.
habiter — to live (somewhere)
- J'habite à Dubaï. — I live in Dubai.
- Elle habite au centre-ville. — She lives in the city center.
parler — to speak
- Je parle français et anglais. — I speak French and English.
- Vous parlez couramment? — Do you speak fluently?
aimer — to love, to like
- J'aime voyager pour le travail. — I like to travel for work.
- Nous aimons les défis. — We love challenges.
chercher — to look for
- Je cherche un partenaire. — I am looking for a partner.
penser — to think
- Je pense que c'est une bonne idée. — I think it is a good idea.
commencer — to start
- La réunion commence à 9 heures. — The meeting starts at 9 o'clock.
présenter — to present, to introduce
- Je vous présente mon collègue. — Let me introduce my colleague.
inviter — to invite
- Nous vous invitons à notre conférence. — We invite you to our conference.
Irregular ALLER (to go)

Usage:
- Je vais à la réunion. — I am going to the meeting.
- Elle va à Paris demain. — She is going to Paris tomorrow.
- On y va? — Shall we go? (colloquial)
- Comment allez-vous? — How are you? (formal)
MANGER and COMMENCER: Special Rules
Verbs ending in -ger (manger, partager, voyager, nager): an e is added before -ons:
- nous mangeons [nu mãzhõ] (not mangons — difficult to pronounce)
Verbs ending in -cer (commencer, annoncer, lancer): a ç is added before -ons:
- nous commençons [nu komãsõ]
Negation of -er Verbs
- Je ne travaille pas le week-end. — I do not work on weekends.
- Nous n'habitons pas à Paris. — We do not live in Paris.
