Imparfait vs. passé composé: key difference

Imparfait (imperfect): formation

Stem = 1st person plural present tense (nous form) minus -ons + endings:

Exception: être → j'étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient

When to use which tense?

Passé composé = completed action

• Action with a clear beginning and end
• Specific moment in the past
• Sequence of events
• Reaction to a situation
• Markers: hier, le 5 mai, soudain, tout à coup, puis, ensuite

Examples:

• J'ai signé le contrat hier. — I signed the contract yesterday. (specific moment)
• Il a appelé et je lui ai répondu. — He called, and I replied.

Imparfait = background, habit, incomplete action

• Description of surroundings/situation
• Repetitive/habitual actions in the past
• Incomplete action (interrupted)
• State, feelings, opinions in the past
• Markers: toujours, souvent, chaque jour, d'habitude, quand j'étais enfant, autrefois

Examples:

• Quand j'habitais à Paris, je prenais le métro. — When I lived in Paris, I used to take the metro. (habit)
• Le marché était très volatile. — The market was very volatile. (state)
• Nous étions en réunion quand le téléphone a sonné. — We were in a meeting (background) when the phone rang (interrupting action).

Classic scheme

Imparfait (background/picture) + Passé Composé (event):

"C'était un lundi matin. Il faisait beau. Je travaillais sur un rapport important quand mon téléphone a sonné. C'était mon associé. Il m'a dit qu'un client potentiel voulait nous rencontrer immédiatement."

Business context

Description of past situation + event:

• Le marché était difficile, mais nous avons trouvé une solution innovante.
• Nous cherchions un partenaire depuis six mois quand nous avons rencontré votre société.
• Les négociations se passaient bien jusqu'au moment où un problème technique est apparu.

Description of past experience:

• Quand je travaillais chez Goldman Sachs, je gérais des portefeuilles. (imparfait — habitual)
• En 2020, j'ai changé de carrière. (passé composé — specific decision)
