BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement)
BATNA — the best thing you can do if negotiations fail. This is your negotiation power.
Strong BATNA = you can walk away. Weak BATNA = you have to agree on any terms.
Rule: never enter negotiations without knowing your BATNA. Improving your BATNA before negotiations is part of the preparation.
It is important to know not only your own BATNA, but also the assumed BATNA of your opponent. The weaker his BATNA — the stronger your position.
ZOPA (Zone of Possible Agreement)
ZOPA — the range within which an agreement is beneficial to both parties. If the ranges do not overlap — agreement is impossible (or requires a change of parameters).
Example: the seller is ready to sell starting at $80K, the buyer is ready to buy up to $100K. ZOPA = $80K–$100K. The task of negotiations is to “capture” as much of ZOPA as possible.
Anchoring in Negotiations
The first number voiced establishes an “anchor” around which all subsequent proposals will revolve.
Anchor rule: you should make the first offer if you have an information advantage. It should be ambitious but justified (otherwise — credibility damage).
Defense against anchor: do not react immediately. Say “I appreciate you sharing that,” pause, return the conversation to your own valuation.
Negotiation Framing
How you present a proposal influences the result. “20% discount” vs “Price without special terms” — a different psychological effect with the same financial result.
Practical Assignment
Before your next important negotiations, perform an analysis: (1) What is your BATNA? How can you improve it? (2) The assumed BATNA of the opponent? (3) Your reservation point — the minimally acceptable outcome? (4) Your anchor target? (5) What is the assumed ZOPA?
