Participe Présent (Present Participle)

Formation: stem (1st person plural) + -ant

• travaillant, finissant, venant, ayant, étant

Usage: describes a characteristic or a concurrent action; replaces a relative clause:

• un contrat stipulant les conditions — a contract, stipulating/providing for the conditions
• une société employant 500 personnes — a company, employing/having 500 employees
• les parties souhaitant collaborer — the parties, wishing/desiring to collaborate

Gérondif vs Participe Présent:

• Gérondif (en + participe présent): subject = subject of the main clause + nuance of "doing something"
• Participe présent: describes a noun (like an adjective)

Gérondif (Gerund): en + -ant

Structure: en + [verb]-ant

Meanings:

Simultaneity (action = simultaneous with the main action)

• En travaillant ensemble, nous obtiendrons de meilleurs résultats. — By working together, we will obtain better results.
• En analysant les données, j'ai identifié un problème. — By analyzing the data, I identified a problem.
