Formation of the conditionnel présent
Futur simple stem + imparfait endings:

Usage of the conditionnel
Polite requests (the main application!)
Conditionnel transforms a direct order into a polite request:
- Vous venez → Pourriez-vous venir? — Could you come?
- Envoyez-moi → Auriez-vous la possibilité de m'envoyer? — Could you send it to me?
- Je veux → Je voudrais — I would like
Key polite formulas:
- Je voudrais un rendez-vous. — I would like an appointment.
- Pourriez-vous me rappeler? — Could you call me back?
- Serait-il possible de reporter la réunion? — Would it be possible to postpone the meeting?
- Je souhaiterais vous parler. — I would like to speak with you.
- Auriez-vous un moment? — Do you have a moment?
- Vous devriez consulter notre équipe. — You should consult our team.
Hypotheses and suppositions
- Ce serait une excellente opportunité. — That would be an excellent opportunity.
- Cela représenterait un investissement de 10 millions. — That would represent an investment of 10 million.
- Dans ce cas, nous pourrions envisager un partenariat. — In that case, we could consider a partnership.
Advice and recommendations
- Vous devriez diversifier votre portefeuille. — You should diversify your portfolio.
- Il serait judicieux de consulter un expert. — It would be wise to consult an expert.
- Je vous conseillerais** d'attendre. — I would advise you to wait.
Conditionnel in business correspondence
Request (letter): Je vous serais reconnaissant(e) de bien vouloir [+ infinitive]. — I would be grateful if you would [+ infinitive].
Je souhaiterais obtenir des informations complémentaires sur votre offre. — I would like to receive additional information about your offer.
Conditional sentence: Si vous acceptiez nos conditions, nous pourrions commencer le projet dès janvier. — If you accepted our terms, we could start the project from January.
