Large Numbers

Important rules:

• mille — never changes: deux mille, dix mille, cent mille
• cent — gets an s only if it is a round hundred and ends there: deux cents, but deux cent trente
• million, milliard — agree in number: trois millions d'euros, cinq milliards de dollars

Separators in numbers (European standard):

• 1 000 000 = 1 000 000 (space or non-breaking space)
• 3 500,75 (comma = decimal sign!) → trois mille cinq cents virgule soixante-quinze

Percentages (les pourcentages)

Reading: X pour cent [pur sã]

• 5% → cinq pour cent
• 6.5% → six virgule cinq pour cent
• 12.8% → douze virgule huit pour cent
• 100% → cent pour cent

Business expressions with %:

• un taux d'intérêt de 4,5% — interest rate of 4.5%
• une croissance de 8% — growth of 8%
• une baisse de 3 pour cent — decrease of 3%
• une hausse de 15% — increase of 15%
• une part de marché de 22% — market share of 22%
• un taux d'occupation de 75% — occupancy rate of 75% (hotels, RE)
• un rendement locatif de 7% — rental yield of 7%

Financial Scales

How to talk about millions and billions in business texts:

• Le budget est de 500 millions d'euros. — The budget is 500 million euros.
• L'investissement total s'élève à 2,3 milliards de dollars. — Total investment amounts to 2.3 billion dollars.
• La capitalisation boursière dépasse les 50 milliards. — Market capitalization exceeds 50 billion.
• Le fonds gère 1,2 milliard d'actifs sous gestion. — The fund manages assets of 1.2 billion.

Abbreviations in texts:

• M€ or M EUR — million euros
• Md€ — billion euros (in the press)
• k€ — thousand euros (kiloeuro)
• bn / Mrd — milliard (in international texts)

Fractions and Proportions

Examples:

• Les deux tiers des investisseurs sont étrangers. — Two thirds of the investors are foreign.
• La moitié du budget est allouée au marketing. — Half of the budget is allocated to marketing.
• Un quart des actifs est en immobilier. — A quarter of the assets is in real estate.
